I haven’t watched it.
I found a way of doing some screenshots from my TV recording and iplayer.
So, in episode 5 Martha played prosecuter, defender, annoyed the CPS woman (though the CPS woman was irritating) and was insufferably priggish to her less able colleague all in one case (she really is just like Clive only without the charm). Nick surprised us all with some stirring oratory in mitigation. And Clive and Niamh learned that workplace relationships have complications (who knew!). The Clive story in pictures (and the full set of pictures on Photobucket).
Why I want Silk in eight words.
Because I’m a competitive bastard. Five words.
Niamh is at a loose end and wonders whether there is anything she can do to help Clive ‘take the pressure off’.
You could work in the library… Give me some space.
Given you and I, what? The baby doesn’t change anything, Clive. I don’t expect you to start planning your life around us.
The looks of confusion, bewilderment and then disappointment that swept across Clive’s face over a period of seconds were wonderful. Rupert is really excellent as Clive.
Clive wonders how Martha responded to Kate’s plan. Clive seems to have shrugged off Billy’s bullying and is playing his own game here.
Martha’s stockings were stolen from her flat and she confides in Clive. Was it only me who saw glimpses of Adam Carter’s intensity when Clive said she should have told the police about the medal?
Spot the Rubik’s cube on Clive’s desk!
I’ve always found your boorish attitude charming
Clive reasserts himself with Billy. Stress or working on an alternative plan for chambers?
Clive learns Martha is being interviewed by the most senior female judge in the country…….
and he is being interviewed by Naimh’s father. I wonder what that says for his chances – on several levels.
So it’s time to kiss and make up with Niamh. He’s worried about his interview. It was a misunderstanding…
I’ll buy you dinner. Let’s pretend yesterday never happened
Oh Clive, you are so…….. smarmy.
All seems well until Clive and Niamh meet Martha and Nick in the pub. (Is there a future coupling there?)
Niamh has been caught out by Martha and makes her excuses. She has just remembered she has work to do…..
Is Martha’s disapproval of Niamh’s relationship with Clive wholly professional or is there a personal element too?
This doesn’t change a thing we are not going to manage this without Martha.
Clive’s reaction to Kate sets a conspiracy in train….
Next week
Ooh, the wig is back and
the lovely Alex Jennings and that coat is a gentle reminder of Whitechapel.
There is a episode 6 video clip on the BBC Silk site with Maxine Peake and Neil Stuke talking about the politics of chambers if anyone is interested. I’m trying to stay away from clips and trailers so I don’t know whether there is any Rupert/ Clive content.
Thanks to Deanna (@akaDee) for letting me know that Whitechapel 2 began in Australia today (25 March) at 21:30 (EDT) on ABC1 and the last episode of series 1 should still be available on iView. Enjoy everyone.
I’ve also seen something recently saying that the most recent UK Who Do You Think You Are series that features Rupert Penry-Jones and his wife, Dervla Kirwan, will also be shown in Australia starting in May. Look out for that one as it’s good.
Thanks to @ellybambi for telling me that Rupert Penry-Jones reading Oscar Wilde’s Roses and Rue was on You Tube. It’s one of the poems Rupert reads on the charity CD Words for You. It’s a good cause and a gorgeous reading.
Well, it’s kind of bad news day. The big bad news is that my computer recording didn’t work last night; which means I don’t have access to shot by shot screencaps, but I have taken these from iplayer and I’ll do some more later.
Anyway, the good news, relatively, is there wasn’t much of Rupert to screen cap although the little we did see was very very good indeed- brilliantly acted and even the haircut is starting to look good.
I was sorry that we didn’t get to see more of the Silk interviews given what the show is about. We didn’t see anything of Clive’s interview other than he was being interviewed by Niamh’s father. In fact, Clive hasn’t been in court for a couple of weeks now and I do hope we see him in his cloak and wig again before the series ends.
I’m glad we got to know Niamh’s character a litle better this week. It will be fascinating to watch how they manage to resolve the many storylines next week and I’m going to try and avoid any trailers.
I can’t see Clive getting Silk because we have seen so little of his court work. Niamh seems more competent than Nick, but we have also seen much more of Nick in action. On the basis of the series emphasis I would guess on Martha for Silk and Nick for pupil. What about you?
Overnight audience was 4.87m. The Guardian has a feature this morning on Silk as an example of a slow burning show.
The BBC are showing a trailer for the next episode of Silk. Episode 5 is screened on 22 March at 9pm on BBC One/HD:
The link to the full set of Rupert Penry-Jones screenshots from episode 4 has now been added to the episode 4 screenshots post.
My recording of the This Morning interview with Rupert Penry-Jones on 1 March was on another computer, so I forgot about doing screenshots. I was wondering whether it was too late but then I looked at the recording again and realised they were absolutely stonkingly gorgeous pics so I needed to share.
Silk really got going last night. It was a good episode and the characters started to relate to each other rather than just interact. The difference was the humour which makes implausible, OTT situations acceptable. The episode got 4.91m viewers.
All in all, it was a really bad day at the office for Clive. The great reveal was that Clive is the father of Martha’s child. Was it a surprise? Who else would send underwear back in a jiffy bag? Of course, it was always possible that it was someone off screen and the timeline seemed slightly awry but it’s drama. And the scenes between Maxine and Rupert were excellent: v funny and touching. Phoning Clive to tell him that she had won was a nice nod back to episode 1 when Martha was looking for someone to share her news.
There were lots in this episode that made earlier episodes make more sense. Loads of people seem to have gone from just liking the show to really loving it too.
The full set have now been uploaded to photobucket – see links at the end of this post.
There was quite a lot of light and dark in this episode. I’m not sure whether that was intended to be metaphorical but, on a more prosaic level, it means scenes filmed in dark pubs and night gloom do not good screenshots make. I always over screencap (especially at the beginning of an episode) so I have picked out some of my favourites here.
Martha ponders the nature of Clive’s charm.
Clive advises the murder defendent. ‘ Choose your barrister very carefully…. If it goes against you your life is over’. Would you want him defending you?
Clive finds solace with Niamh until Billy’s sting sends his world tumbling down around him.
And Martha has news too.
How long have you known?
About two weeks.
‘Fuck me, Martha’
‘I did’
Clive goes back to Martha. It happened in Nottingham
“We were brilliant weren’t we?”
“The sex or the trial?”
“Well as one-night stands go…”
Gives the baby a good start, he argues.
But Billy makes Clive cry. Hmmm…or was Clive just being manipulative?
Clive helps Martha win her police case and remembers Nottingham
‘Sex?’ ‘I’ve got a closing argument to make’ says Martha. ‘Not exactly a no then’, beams Clive
And plotting how to help Billy entrap Kate – or is he?
Episode 4 – Full Rupert Penry-Jones / Clive Reader focussed screenshots
Part 1 Outside and chambers
Part 2 Court and ‘The Sting’
Part 3 Baby news and Billy
Part 4 A new order
Rupert Penry-Jones attended the First Light Movie Awards yesterday and presented one of the awards. A number of tweets and this pic suggests Rupert looked particularly gorgeous. The Getty images site has more photos including Rupert with Miranda Hart and also with David Morrissey.
Updated 16 March.
Once again I’ve divided the screenshots into scenes which makes them easier to upload and access.
I liked this episode better as we got to see more of the other characters, especially Nick, Kate and Billy. Overnight viewers fell a little to 4.84m.
